Asus Warns of Exploding non-certified Eee PC batteries

17 Nov

Asustek Computer has cautioned consumers against using third-party Sony laptop battery with its Asus Eee PCs, and warns that it will not cover hardware damage due to the use of a non-certified battery under warranty. This follows a recent, unsubstantiated, report that a third-party battery exploded in China.

Second- and third-tier battery makers in China have begun to manufacture batteries designed to be used with the Asus Eee PC. Some vendors are offering batteries with capacities up to 10400 mAh, which can support up to 5.5 hours of usage, priced around $80.

However, reports claim that one of these “high-capacity” notebook batteries recently overheated during charging, and eventually exploded causing damage to the Asus Eee PC. According to the reports, Asustek has refused to repair the PC, but Asustek has denied knowledge of the damage, while stressing that in such an event, any needed repairs that were the result of using non-certified laptop sony vgp-bps9 would not be covered by the company’s warranty.

The China-based vendor said to have sold the 10400 mAh laptop battery has also refuted that its product caused the damage. The company commented that its batteries are in increasingly high demand, and as such rival companies have started the rumor in order to hurt its sales

Each owner of a VGP-BPS9 Battery, iPod or cell phone look forward to get at last such power source for their units that allow to avoid recharging them only for short time and being quite safety. The evolutionary step in this direction is being made by fuel cells manufacturers. But they consider it will take one or two years to make fuel cells non-combustible, small and cheap. Fuel cells should be long-lasting and resistant to overheating. While fuel cells makers work on this development electronic manufacturers are sure their products prevail at the market.

The US government has made reaching the purpose of fuel sells development in more easy way as the Department of Transportation had modified the regulations for hazardous materials VGP-BPS9 carriage. Since then it is permitted to carry the fuel cells methanol and butane which are flammable, and formic acid which is corrosive.

Frost & Sullivan energy and power systems consultant Sara Bradford said:

“That was one of the largest challenges to this market, to overcome that regulation issue. We are closer, much closer, than even two years ago in terms of the companies’ internal designs, how they’ve met their milestones and just the amount of testing and evaluation that’s SONY VGP-BPS8 Battery going on right now”.

It is likely next year a new portable fuel cell will be introduced to the market. That fuel cell will be suitable for any device and will be charged through USB port. This innovation is planned to be developed by Lilliputian Systems Inc., a Wilmington, Mass., whose vice-president of business development Mouli Ramani believes a small charger with butane will successfully do that task. A minute amount of the fuel will make a battery run 20 times longer than a conventional battery of the same size.

For the time being Lilliputian is declining to name those multinational entities with whom they has already signed commercial agreements and are going to design fuel cells in such a way that they will be embedded ain gadgets.
